We have not tested these mowers. This guide compares installation requirements from manufacturer documentation reviewed in September 2026. It is a way to evaluate your lawn and ask better questions, not a performance ranking.
The short answer
A boundary-wire mower can be a sensible choice when the perimeter rarely changes and satellite reception is difficult. A wire-free mower can make boundary changes easier, but its suitability depends on the navigation system: satellite corrections, cameras, or a combination. Neither category is automatically the right choice for a complex garden.
Start with the charging location, narrow passages, tree cover and steepest working slope. Then match those conditions to the exact mower’s installation instructions. Our buying guide covers the wider area, service and ownership questions.
Compare the installation, not just the label
| Approach | What defines the working area | What to inspect | Typical troubleshooting starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boundary wire | A physical perimeter loop | Cable route, obstacle islands and model-specific clearances | Station power, connectors and loop continuity |
| Satellite navigation with local corrections | Virtual map and a local reference station | Sky view, station location and communication coverage | Positioning state, reference station and docking location |
| Satellite navigation with network corrections | Virtual map and a correction service | Regional coverage, data connection and exact model support | Connectivity and positioning status |
| Camera-based navigation | Visual recognition, sometimes combined with other sensors | Lawn edges, lighting, obstacles and exclusions in the manual | Camera condition and the model’s boundary rules |
These categories overlap. A camera on a satellite-guided mower does not prove it can operate indefinitely without positioning signals, and “wire-free” does not mean that power cables or physical barriers are unnecessary.
Examples from current manufacturer documentation
Husqvarna EPOS: the manufacturer describes cloud corrections in selected markets and a local reference-station alternative. The cloud option needs a suitable data connection; local corrections do not require internet for navigation. Weak-signal assistance varies by model, including camera support or Support by Wire. Check model, region and installation requirements in Husqvarna’s EPOS guide. Do not assume a U.S. cloud offer is available at a Canadian address.
Segway Navimow: the i Series page describes satellite and vision positioning. Navimow also advertises network corrections for supported models and offers a coverage check; that shared website feature does not establish compatibility for every original i Series mower. Match the exact product and accessory requirements before purchase; newer i2, LiDAR and AWD models should not inherit the original i Series specifications simply because they share part of a name.
Mammotion LUBA 2 AWD: the manufacturer’s page identifies this as an earlier generation and points shoppers toward LUBA 3. It describes satellite positioning with vision assistance and a one-year included 4G period. We have not established renewal pricing or which functions remain after that period. Obtain those terms for the actual unit before relying on cellular features.
Worx Landroid Vision: the WR208 manual describes camera-based lawn recognition. That moves the installation questions toward distinguishable edges, exclusions and the manual’s site requirements. Worx’s FiatLux page also shows why night operation needs an exact model and accessory check. Do not transfer a lighting claim across the entire range.
What a boundary wire commits you to
You must route and protect the cable, follow clearances and create obstacle islands correctly. Keep a record of the route before gardening, edging or aerating. Repairs are physical: inspect power and connectors before deciding that the cable is broken.
For Automower islands, Husqvarna instructs installers to bring the outbound and return wires close together without crossing them. Other installation details must come from the exact manual. See our boundary-wire guide and lost-loop diagnosis.
What wire-free changes
Virtual boundaries can simplify layout changes, but signal or visual limitations still need a plan. Ask a seller to explain what the mower does in the weakest part of your lawn and at the dock. A fallback advertised for a short interruption is not proof of reliable operation under permanent tree cover.
A phone provides a preliminary network check. Its cellular signal is not a guarantee for a mower using different radio hardware or a different carrier. Confirm coverage through the manufacturer’s process and ask whether the seller offers an installation survey.
If the mower reaches the station but fails to charge, contacts and seating may be relevant. If it cannot establish its docking position, follow positioning diagnostics first. Our docking guide separates those cases.
Costs and limits to get in writing
Ask for the full installed price, including reference hardware, mounting, connectivity and optional accessories. Confirm renewal fees and the features that depend on them. Check local service and warranty coverage for both the mower and its positioning equipment.
Compare slope in the same units: percent and degrees are different. Check working-area and boundary limits separately, using our slope guide as a starting point. Connectivity also does not guarantee theft recovery; read the theft-protection guide.
Your pre-purchase walk-through
- Draw the lawn, beds, drop-offs and narrow passages.
- Mark the proposed dock and any reference-station location.
- Note tree canopy, buildings and places with weak connectivity.
- Measure area and the steepest relevant slopes.
- Take the sketch to the seller and request an exact-model installation plan.
- Confirm regional availability, support, return terms and recurring charges.
We have not measured mowing reliability, obstacle avoidance or accuracy in your garden. Those require a suitable on-site assessment and, ideally, a trial. Use the yard-automation guide to decide whether a mower is the next purchase worth investigating.
Update — September 28, 2026: Clarified that advertised network corrections require confirmation of exact-model compatibility and coverage.
