Robot Mower Not Returning to Charging Station: Diagnostic Guide

Separate a robot mower’s return problem into three stages: finding the station, entering it, and charging once seated. The useful first observation is where the sequence stops. Cleaning the charging contacts will not resolve every navigation problem, and a mower that charges when placed on the base can still have an approach or installation problem.

Reviewed September 28, 2026. The examples below use Husqvarna Automower manufacturer documentation, including wired and EPOS installations. We have not tested docking reliability across brands.

Record one return attempt

Observe from outside the mower’s path and keep people and pets clear. If the mower is repeatedly colliding, sliding or moving toward a hazard, stop it rather than collecting another attempt. Otherwise, note its starting location, whether it reaches the station, the final movement it makes and the exact message. A short video can help support distinguish these stages.

Where it stops Checks to prioritize Useful evidence
Does not reach the station Navigation method, route access, operating-area mode and the specific positioning or wire message Map, stopping location and app status
Reaches the station but cannot seat Approach clearance, obstacles, station position and baseplate condition Side/front photos and video of the approach
Seats but does not charge Station power, prescribed contact inspection, charging message and permitted battery temperature Indicator, charge status and whether the battery percentage changes

1. The mower never reaches home

For wired Automower installations, Husqvarna explains that the mower can search using the station signal and boundary or guide wires. Its docking test checks the installed wire routes. Use the test for each applicable route; success on one approach does not test every part of a multi-guide layout. A loop warning belongs in the separate boundary-signal investigation.

Also check for a simple mismatch between the job and installation. Husqvarna’s empty-battery troubleshooting includes guide-wire problems, search settings, blocked access and Secondary Area mode. A mower used in a separate area may require manual return under its operating instructions. Do not label that expected behavior a docking failure.

EPOS needs a separate branch

An EPOS mower returns through a docking point before using the station signal for its final approach. Husqvarna’s docking-point guidance requires a clear sky view at that point. On supported Wi-Fi-only products using EPOS through the Husqvarna Cloud, it also requires Wi-Fi coverage across the work area. A nearby router is not evidence that the docking point has the connection it needs.

Record the app’s positioning and connectivity state. Check whether the station, docking point or transport path has moved since the last successful return. Follow the relevant installation workflow before changing several map settings at once. Other wire-free brands use different positioning systems, so their own manual governs this check.

2. It finds the station but misses the contacts

With the mower stopped, inspect the approach and station. Has soil settled under the base? Is a toy, branch or grass buildup blocking the entry? Is the baseplate visibly bent? Compare the installed clearances with the model’s diagram, including any mower house added later.

Husqvarna’s station-placement guide calls for a level location and an unbent baseplate. It also discusses interference from nearby metal and gives different layouts for wired and EPOS installations. Use those diagrams rather than a single generic clearance copied from another mower.

If permitted by the manual, placing the mower correctly in the station lets you observe whether charging begins. A successful charge narrows the immediate complaint to the automatic return or entry sequence; it does not prove a guide wire, sensor or battery is healthy under all conditions.

3. It docks but charging does not begin

Check the station’s power indication and the exact charging message. Follow the manual before inspecting or cleaning accessible contacts, and use only the approved cleaning method. Do not apply an abrasive or bend contacts based on advice for a different machine.

Husqvarna’s charging guide includes dirty contacts, poor contact during docking and battery temperature outside the accepted range. Those are different investigations. An empty-battery message by itself is not evidence that the battery needs replacing.

Confirm recovery and know when to stop

After a documented adjustment, observe an automatic return from the affected part of the lawn and confirm that charging starts. Record the change and outcome before making another adjustment. Our practical recommendation is to compare the same route where possible, so a successful easy approach does not hide the original problem.

If the fault recurs after the owner checks, or the station, cable or contacts are damaged, send support the photos, video, model, full messages and navigation type. Ask for diagnosis before buying contacts, a battery or a circuit board. The error-message guide provides a record format for that handoff.

Update — September 28, 2026: Separated navigation, docking and charging faults; removed claims that one cause explains most failures.
