Make a winter plan for the mower, battery, charging station, power supply and positioning equipment separately. They do not necessarily share the same storage rules. Before the last charge, find the instructions for your exact model and write down its required charge level, shutdown sequence and storage temperature.
Research-based guide, checked September 28, 2026. We have not tested storage methods. The manufacturer example below concerns Husqvarna Automower; another brand’s battery or station may require a different procedure.
Complete this five-part storage card
| Part | Instruction to find | Your record |
|---|---|---|
| Mower | Approved cleaning method, shutdown and storage position | Model / manual page / location: ________ |
| Battery | Charge before storage, temperature limits and any recharge interval | Required level / next check date: ________ |
| Charging station | Which components to remove and the alternative if left outdoors | Components stored / instructions followed: ________ |
| Power supply and connectors | Power isolation, storage and protection of disconnected ends | Labels / photographs saved: ________ |
| Reference station or other positioning device | Outdoor-use permission and consequences of moving it | Mounting position / power plan: ________ |
This card prevents a common planning error: finding a warm place for the mower while leaving the rest of the installation undecided. An unheated shed is not automatically frost-free. Check its expected conditions against the equipment’s limits rather than relying on the word “indoors.”
Automower example: several different winter rules
Husqvarna’s winter-storage guide calls for a full charge before switching the mower off and dry, above-freezing indoor storage. It recommends bringing the charging station and power supply inside, with a specific exception for the NERA station baseplate. Boundary and guide wires can remain installed. Most models do not need charging during storage, but some older ones need a three-month interval; verify the manual.
The same guide treats an EPOS reference station separately and explains the alternative for a charging station that must stay outdoors. Do not combine parts of the indoor and outdoor procedures. Confirm the exact arrangement with the manufacturer if you cannot meet the preferred storage conditions.
Prepare a useful handover to your future self
- Save the current installation. Photograph station terminals and cable labels. Record any unresolved error before taking the setup apart.
- Inspect and clean by the approved method. Fully shut down before handling the underside. Avoid adopting another model’s washing or disassembly instructions.
- Separate wear from damage. Record blades that need routine replacement, damaged connectors and abnormal wheel movement. Arrange repairs before the next season instead of discovering them on the first mowing day.
- Complete the documented charge and shutdown. Write down the date and whether a later charge is required for your model.
- Store each component according to its own instructions. Label protected connectors and keep a photograph of the final arrangement.
A generic lithium-battery storage percentage is not a substitute for a complete mower’s manual. Likewise, an app that cannot reach a powered-off mower does not by itself prove that the battery has failed.
Compare home storage and dealer storage on the same basis
If home storage cannot meet the required conditions, ask for a written service description. Compare storage alone with cleaning, replacement parts, diagnostics, transport and a spring functional check. Do not assume that a “winter service” price includes all of them.
| Question | What to record |
|---|---|
| Which components are accepted? | Mower only, or station and power supply too? |
| Which work is included? | Inspection, cleaning, software, battery check and parts separately |
| What requires another approval? | Repair estimate, parts and collection charges |
| How is it returned? | Collection date and whether installation or restart is included |
For ownership budgeting, put the actual quote into the running-cost worksheet; this guide does not assign a universal winter-service price.
Spring restart: use the labels, then verify the route
Return equipment to the documented positions and reconnect using the saved labels and manual. Check the lawn for new obstacles, landscaping changes and damaged wire before a normal run. Follow charging-temperature limits before charging a mower brought out of cold storage.
If an Automower will not start after winter, Husqvarna’s restart guidance distinguishes a discharged battery from other start problems and directs unresolved faults to the model’s troubleshooting process. Record the exact message instead of diagnosing from a generic light colour. For a boundary fault, start with no-loop-signal checks.
Finish by observing a normal departure, mowing period and return to charge from a safe position. A powered-on display is only the first check; a usable installation must also complete its intended route.
Update — September 28, 2026: Removed generic discharge advice and replaced universal storage rules with a model-specific component checklist.
