Robot Mower Wet Grass: What Actually Happens and Why

Some robot mowers are designed to mow in rain; others use rain detection to pause. Neither behavior tells you by itself whether today’s lawn conditions are suitable. Check the exact mower’s instructions, then look for slipping, clumping, standing water and damage to the surface. A weather setting is one input to the decision, not a diagnosis of every wet-day stop.

Three weather features that do different jobs

Documented feature What it uses What to check when the mower parks
Worx Landroid Classic rain delay Moisture at a physical rain sensor The sensor state and the remaining delay in the app or display
Husqvarna Automower Rain Guard Weather information for the selected area The enabled Smart Routine and any app explanation
Husqvarna Automower Weather Timer Adjustment of mowing time to grass growth The permitted schedule and Weather Timer setting

These are named features with different purposes. A timer that responds to grass growth should not be assumed to be a rain sensor, and a weather-service routine does not measure the moisture in a particular shaded patch.

Landroid Classic: when the rain-delay clock starts

Worx’s rain-delay guidance says the mower returns to its base when the sensor detects moisture. The delay starts after the sensor is no longer wet; the documented default is 180 minutes and is adjustable. Humidity can also activate the sensor.

That timing matters when the shower has stopped but the mower remains parked. Count from the sensor’s dry state, not from the moment you stopped seeing rain. Check your model and saved setting before treating the wait as a fault. Do not tape over the sensor or repeatedly power-cycle the mower just to make it leave while the lawn is unsuitable.

Automower: rain capability and optional parking are separate

Husqvarna describes Automower as capable of working in rain. Its Weather Timer explanation describes adjusting mowing hours to grass growth within the set schedule, rather than a physical moisture-triggered rain stop.

Separately, Rain Guard can park supported connected Automower models based on forecast rain. Husqvarna notes that the forecast may differ from actual weather and that synchronization can delay parking. The article lists Wi-Fi/cellular models other than Aspire R4 and models equipped with an Automower Connect kit; confirm availability for your mower and region in the app.

A mower parked by that routine in a dry garden may be following its weather information correctly. Look for the app’s reason for parking before changing an unrelated sensor or charging setting.

Decide from the ground as well as the app

Our practical check is to inspect the parts of the lawn that dry last: shaded passages, the bottom of slopes and the approach to the station. The aim is to identify whether those locations remain workable, not to apply a universal waiting time.

  • The ground is flooded, unstable or outside the manual’s operating conditions: keep the mower out until the condition is resolved. Rain capability is not permission to operate in standing water.
  • Wheels slip or leave repeated ruts: pause that attempt and record the location. Husqvarna’s slipping guidance includes wet grass and unsuitable route slopes; it recommends allowing the grass to dry or correcting a recurring route problem.
  • The mower is parked with a weather message: check the feature in the table above and its actual settings. A normal pause needs a different response from a hardware error.
  • It stops with a loop, wheel or charging message: preserve that message and use the relevant fault procedure. The fact that it rained is not proof of a failed moisture sensor.

Use a small mowing log to choose the schedule

Record the date, start time, ground condition in the difficult patch, weather feature enabled, outcome and any message. Compare wet and dry occasions without changing several settings together. For example, a shady passage that works after drying but slips during an early damp run suggests a scheduling or local ground issue to investigate; it does not prove an electrical fault.

If the same area remains troublesome when dry, use the stuck-mower observation guide and check the installation. If the only issue is repeated weather parking, review the documented routine and choose an allowed schedule that fits the lawn’s conditions. There is no fixed number of hours after sunrise that guarantees dry grass.

After the run

Stop and shut down the mower before the cleaning and inspection allowed by its manual. Remove accessible clipping buildup using the approved method; do not open the housing to look for corrosion as a routine wet-weather check. If the warning persists on dry ground after the prescribed owner checks, send support the log and exact message. The error-message guide helps assemble that record.
