Robot Mower Boundary Wire Installation: Step-by-Step Guide

A boundary-wire installation starts with a drawing of the lawn, the charging-station approach and every edge that needs a different clearance. Lay out the complete route before cutting wire. A working loop signal confirms only part of the installation; the mower must also reach its areas, respect exclusions and return through the intended route.

Research-based planning guide, checked September 28, 2026. We have not installed or measured the systems described here. Examples use Husqvarna Automower documentation and are labelled accordingly. Follow the current installation manual for your exact model.

Survey the route before buying extra wire

Draw the mowable area separately from the property boundary. Mark walls, same-level paving, drops, ponds, flower beds, narrow passages, slopes, separate lawns and the intended charging location. Put the manufacturer’s required clearance beside each edge. A distance suitable for a flush path may be unsuitable beside a raised wall.

Site survey: measure first, then check the model manual
Location Record Decision
Station Ground level, approach space, cable route to the approved power supply Can the required station layout fit without an improvised electrical installation?
Passage Physical width, required edge setbacks, turns Does usable width remain after both setbacks?
Island Obstacle perimeter, connecting route and required clearance Can the island be wired exactly as the manufacturer shows?
Slope at an edge Slope and direction of travel Does it meet the separate boundary-slope rule?
Water or a drop Required physical barrier and boundary layout Resolve the barrier requirement before allowing operation.

Use the model’s operator manual for those values. Satellite sky-view requirements belong to the applicable positioning system; they are not a universal requirement for a wire-guided mower’s charging station.

Estimate wire with the island paths included

For planning, separate the perimeter route, island circuits, trips out to islands and back, and any guide wire. Check the model’s maximum loop length and approved wire specification before purchasing.

Illustrative measurement: a drawn route uses 120 m around the outside. One island adds 8 m around the obstacle and a 6 m connecting path each way. The boundary subtotal is 120 + 8 + 6 + 6 = 140 m. A separate 25 m guide route would make the measured wire total 165 m. This is arithmetic from an imaginary layout, not an installation recommendation. Measure the real setbacks and connections and follow the manual on any service allowance; do not leave arbitrary coils by the station.

Understand islands and passages before laying the route

Husqvarna’s island guidance shows the outbound and return wire together along the connecting route and warns against crossing them. This geometry is what allows the mower to pass the paired route while respecting the obstacle loop. Copy the diagram for your model rather than inventing an exclusion shape.

A narrow passage has several measurements: the space between physical obstacles, the gap between boundary wires after setbacks, and the room beside a guide wire. They are not interchangeable. Husqvarna’s passage instructions distinguish installations with and without a guide and identify model exceptions. Check those conditions before deciding that a mower will fit through a gate.

Where used, a guide wire has its own path and connection rules. Husqvarna’s guide-wire instructions cover clearance, routing and which connectors are supported on particular models. A terminal visible on a station is not proof that your mower supports another guide wire.

Install in stages so errors remain easy to find

  1. Choose and verify the station location. Confirm its model-specific approach, level and power requirements first.
  2. Mark the whole route. Measure each edge against its clearance rule. Resolve ponds, drops and other hazards before proceeding.
  3. Place the specified wire and pegs or burial route. Use the model’s permitted method and depth. Where digging is involved, identify existing buried services first.
  4. Make islands and guide connections from the diagrams. Photograph each junction and label the station wires before connecting.
  5. Connect only with the specified hardware and power isolated as instructed. Do not substitute tape for an approved underground joint.
  6. Follow the model’s first-start and calibration checks. Record the station indicator and any exact error text.

Acceptance checks before routine mowing

  • All intended grass areas are reachable by the documented operating method.
  • Excluded areas and required physical barriers are complete.
  • The mower passes the intended narrow routes and returns to charge during an observed normal run.
  • Wire is secured as required and is not exposed to cutting or routine edging.
  • Any remaining edge strip is understood; the mower’s body offset from the blade means a boundary does not promise edge-to-edge cutting.

Observe from outside the operating area with people and pets kept clear. Do not push an operating mower against the wire to test it. If a signal fault remains, use the no-loop-signal diagnostic guide. If the physical route cannot satisfy the manual, redesign it or consult the installer before mowing.

Keep the final drawing, photographs, wire lengths and connector locations with the manual. They are more useful for a future repair than an unmarked buried loop. Still deciding on navigation? Compare wire-free and boundary-wire requirements.

Update — September 28, 2026: Removed generic timings and clearances; added a measured-route worksheet and model-specific installation checks.
